Celebrating the Women Who Craft a More Beautiful World
Share
March invites us to slow down and notice the women whose hands and stories are woven into the things we use every day. At Ten Thousand Villages Abbotsford, so many of the pieces on our shelves carry the work of women artisans around the world women who are not only incredibly skilled, but who are building meaningful change for their families and communities through their craft.
Across the Ten Thousand Villages network, the majority of artisans are women, and many are the primary income earners in their households. Through fair trade partnerships, they are paid fairly and often paid upfront for their work. This means they can purchase materials, provide for their families, and plan for the future without the burden of debt. That stability creates something powerful: dignity, confidence, and new opportunity.
We see these stories reflected in the products in our store. The jewelry from Starfish Project is made by women who have experienced exploitation and are now building new futures through safe, dignified employment. Each piece represents not only beauty, but restoration, offering women opportunities for education, counseling, and long-term independence.
The handcrafted accessories from Fair Anita are created by women across several countries who are working toward financial independence and leadership in their communities. From earrings to textiles, each item reflects both traditional techniques and a growing sense of confidence and possibility.
And the textiles and artisan goods from Asha Project are made by women in and around Delhi who are gaining access to fair wages and safe working conditions. Through their craft, these women are able to support their households, invest in education, and build stronger futures for the next generation.
Behind each of these pieces is a woman with a story. A mother sending her children to school. A daughter continuing a family tradition. A group of women finding strength and independence together.
International Women’s Month is a chance to honour these stories. It is a reminder that empowerment can look like something simple and profound at the same time the ability to earn a fair wage, to make choices for your own life, and to dream about the future with hope.
When you shop at Ten Thousand Villages, you are part of that story. You are choosing to support women who are shaping a more beautiful and just world through their creativity and courage.
This month, we celebrate them with gratitude, with admiration, and with the recognition that their work reaches farther than we can see.
